The Spa At Cheeca Reopens Offering Organic Sustainable Luxury & Locally-Inspired Treatments

The Spa at Cheeca recently reopened debuting a new concept focused on organic sustainable luxury and featuring a locally-inspired treatment menu.

Spearheading the exciting new changes is Tricia Banister, new Spa Director, whose pedigree includes The Spa @ The Setai and TheSpaAtDavidBartonGym at Gansevoort South in Miami Beach.

“Following the lead of Cheeca Lodge, the legendary resort where it is located, the Spa at Cheeca uses the purest and highest quality of products available from sustainable farms and fair trade sources,” said Bannister. Treatments feature such sophisticated beauty products as Voya from Ireland, the world’s first range of certified organic, hand-harvested seaweed based products; SpaRitual, a provider of luxurious organic vegan products for body, feet, hands and nails; Ama La, an EcoCert, holistic botanical skincare line, and La Bella Donna, the first mineral-based, allergen-free cosmetic collection originally designed for post cosmetic surgery.

Reinterpreting the resort’s over 60-year old traditions, new treatments range from custom organic facials and revitalizing massage services and body treatments to in-suite spa baths and Calusa Healing among other mind, body and spirit techniques. Some of the signature new treatments include a Lava Shell Massage ($150/60 min), which utilizes Cheeca’s signature warming oil and ionizing lava shells straight from the sea, and The Sportsman ($145/60 min), which combines neuromuscular, myofacial, Thai and sports massage techniques. A variety of relaxing, stimulating, detoxifying, mineralizing and skin-softening spa baths from the Skinny Girl to the Signature Seaweed Soak are available in-suite in the terrace open-air bathtubs for two, a signature feature of the resort’s new Premier Spa Suites. Private yoga and Pilates sessions, personal training, acupuncture, Naturopathic Physician and nutritional consultations and wellness coaching are also available.

The new Spa at Cheeca allows guests to spa wherever they are, offering poolside DIY treatments – think Peel Off Anti-Aging Facial ($40), an Oceanside tiki hut for alfresco treatments and spa baths en-suite. The Spa at Cheeca also features poolside cabanas, Tahitian-style Spa Lagoon, adults-only lap pool, a secluded oasis Jacuzzi, and an outdoor sundeck for lounging post-treatment.

The 5,700 square-foot oasis of relaxation and revitalization features traditional Florida décor. Prior to each treatment, guests are treated to foot baths in healing copper bowls in the spa’s Ritual Room.

The Spa at Cheeca is set among the lush, tropical gardens of the newly reopening Cheeca Lodge & Spa in Islamorada, Florida Keys.

Body treatments

Elite Day Spa: Sea Salt Glow Scrub
24 W 39th St between Fifth and Sixth Aves (212-730-2100, elitedayspa.net). 30mins, $45. Technician Olivia began by massaging thick lotion onto my back, neck, shoulders and arms, telepathically finding all the spots where I hold tension. Next, she smoothed on a cool, fine-grained sea-salt mixture, which felt especially therapeutic when rubbed over my chapped soles and palms. After the process was repeated on my stomach, my chest, and the tops of my legs and arms, I was told to hop into the in-room shower to rinse off. I left with smooth, baby-soft skin. Best part: Though the scrub was billed as a 30-minute treatment, it clocked in closer to 45 and I didn’t get charged a dime more than the original price.—Cristina Velocci

The Face and Body Shop: Tahitian body polish
40-21 23rd Ave between Steinway and 41st Sts, Astoria, Queens (718-204-9390, thefaceandbodyshop.com). 45mins, $50. My aesthetician, Cleo, began by pressing her hands down on my feet, legs, back and shoulders, setting me at ease. Then she applied a silky, fine-grained scrub containing pomegranate seeds everywhere from my toes to the top of my neck, massaging it into my skin with quick, lateral movements. After a rinse in the in-room shower, I hopped back onto the table, now covered with fluffy towels, for a rubdown with a flowery perfumed cream. I emerged with a well-hydrated epidermis that smelled like a lovely pomegranate blossom.
Best part: After the service, Cleo diagnosed my thighs as my driest body parts—an area I’d never imagined needed TLC.—Cristina Velocci

Shade Bar Boutique Spa: Organic Body Butter
36-05 Ditmars Blvd between 36th and 37th Sts, Astoria, Queens (718-278-7892, shadebarspa.com). 30mins, $40. Working up from my winter-cracked heels to my shoulders, aesthetician Eliza applied the vanilla-ginger-scented shea butter (which smelled like Christmas cookies; the others, tropical smoothie and pineapple-lime among them, smelled like spring break) all over my body, modestly uncovering each section only as she worked on it.
Take note: Eliza was right when she said that after five minutes the lotion would completely absorb into my skin—unfortunately, I hopped off the table after only four and nearly slid off the hardwood floor and onto my well-moisturized tailbone.—Carolyn Juris

23rd April 2010, Crown Spa Hotel Winner of Enjoy England Award for Sustainable TourismApril 25, 2010

23rd April 2010, Crown Spa Hotel Winner of Enjoy England Award for Sustainable Tourism.

St George’s Day, the great and good from the UK Tourism Industry gathered in the historic Dome and Corn Exchange in Brighton for the prestigious Enjoy England Awards for Excellence. The annual award gathering meets to formally recognise the very best of English tourism.

Flying the flag for Yorkshire and Scarborough the Crown Spa Hotel earned the coveted Gold Award for Sustainable Tourism, David Frank Administration Director said “This award is official independent recognition of our working team and their commitment “beyond the call of duty” to all things Crown Spa! Further, that any business can reduce its carbon foot print by at least 25% without having to embark on expensive projects as long as you communicate good awareness and the management team implement a well thought out training plan.”

David Frank added that “UK businesses should take note that this approach is based firmly in economic benefits, in the last 5 years our power light and heat costs have reduced overall by over £250K and the costs have been no more than £25K over that period, Simples!”

When you first arrive at the Crown Spa Hotel the most noticeable sustainable statement you will see is the solar panels, but these were only installed after the Hotel had already achieved a 25% CO2 saving, from implementing simple stuff first like behavioural changes resulting from good staff training in awareness of the sustainable agenda, purchasing more efficient plant and equipment on a replacement basis (like LED lights, efficient refrigeration units etc..), bedroom master switches.

Richard Frank Managing Director said “If you can achieve these types of savings in a building which is grade 2 listed and over 165 year old you can do this anywhere, there is no justifiable business reason not to embrace the sustainable agenda as there a sound economic benefits to be had in these difficult times.”

Towards Sustainable Spa Tourism Activities in Greece

Thermal (Spa) tourism in Greece has been developed since the beginning of the 19th century due to numerous significant thermal springs spread all over the country. After having reached its time of prosperity during ’50s, 60s and 70s Spa tourism entered a period of recession and decline. For the last 20 years Greek spa towns and especially their infrastructure (thermal installations) have been suffering from abandonment and degradation. Parallel to these developments, some new categories of visitors / clients of thermal springs have also appeared as a consequence of the broader socio-economic and cultural changes. This paper presents and comments on some results of a research conducted by the authors in the most important spa towns of Greece (Edipsos, Kamena Vourla, Loutra Ypatis) which represent 47% of the spa tourists. The principal objective was to survey the basic characteristics of the users of thermal springs (by questioning them) as well as the opinion of local authorities and managers of companies/enterprises operating in the area. Particularly, the results concerning the profile of spa tourists have a special scientific interest since they prove that commonly held opinions and ideas in relation to spa tourism are often fully mistaken. Besides the research shows the emerging structural planning problems derived from the different needs of ‘classic’ and ‘modern’(contemporary) spa users opposing each other and thus preventing local economies and societies to get full profit from a special/alternative form of tourism, traditionally considered as a comparative advantage of the country.
